Anna (any) is a Chinese-American director, deviser, and dramaturg. She is interested in acts of adaptation: of stories, of bodies, to other people, to inhospitable environments. They are interested in the ways we metaphorically or literally twist ourselves to fit into new spaces, particularly for marginalized communities. Her theater-making practice is rooted in playful ensemble collaboration to create unexpected, intimate, and precise messes.They are interested in exploring theatre that is not only transformative in its storytelling, but in its process—theatre that is communal, silly, and rigorous in the rehearsal room as well.
Recent directing credits include a dance theatre interpretation of Constellations by Nick Payne that explored ways to erase the onstage distinctions between dancers and actors, Three States of Matter, a devised, movement-centric adaptation of Three Sisters about climate migration, and Man of God by Anna Moench, an Asian American rage play about a group of Korean girls dealing with the male gaze.
She is a recent Stanford graduate with a bachelors with honors in Theatre and Performance Studies and a minor in creative writing. They are a former Artistic Director for the Stanford Asian American Theater Project (AATP), where they helmed a season with 4 shows and a new works festival, including founding a new developmental stage series to support experimental small projects and give underrepresented theatre-makers greater access to resources.
